Families today come together in many different ways and relationships within a family can be complicated. Parenting, blending families, peer pressure for adolescents, and coping with divorce are just a few of the issues that families today may face. Family counseling helps families learn to improve communication, set goals and boundaries, navigate divorce and remarriage, and understand how the behavior of one member affects everyone in the family. Depression and anxiety are defined by excessive worry, fatigue, restlessness, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, irritability, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in hobbies and relationships, and/or feelings of hopelessness. We can help you discover who you really are, what interests you, what motivates you, and assist in finding compassion for yourself. At Counseling Catawba, you have a place to tell your story and learn tools to manage the different, and often difficult, moods that are getting in your way of living a joyful life.
An addict needs help, and so does anyone affected by an addict and the addiction.
With a goal of recovery and maintaining sobriety, we will explore reasons for medicating behaviors, identify triggers, learn new coping skills, and explore healthy support systems. For loved ones, we will discuss the recovery process and learn to support the addict positively without supporting the addiction.
If you are "stuck" in a the feelings and experience of a traumatic event, we want to help you heal. In a safe environment, we can process the emotions about the trauma and provide the comfort that you need to heal. We will explore ways of challenging your thinking patterns around the event and let go of any lingering guilt or shame that may be associated with what happened. Ultimately, we want you to learn self care and self acceptance so that you can move past the trauma and enjoy life again.

Choosing the right therapist is an important decision and the right fit is necessary for the therapeutic process. My work is characterized by my belief that we are all capable of making changes that can enhance the quality of our life experiences. Do I/we really need counseling?
A good sign that you might want counseling is if you are having difficulties in your relationships, at work, school, or home, or you are struggling with some aspect of your daily life. You may have a hard time focusing, you may feel distracted, or you may feel unhappy a lot of the time. You may also have difficulty sleeping, have a hard time sharing your feelings with those around you, or you may feel restless or "stuck." If you are considering couples or family counseling, you may be experiencing any of these struggles that may be a result of frequent disagreements with your loved one(s), lack of communication, trust, and/or closeness, and feel the relationship is at risk. Either way, if you are currently questioning if you should go into counseling, that is probably the best sign that you should.
What happens in a counseling session?
Counselors understand that your first session may be scary. We will start with greetings and a discussion of confidentiality. I'll ask you what brought you to counseling, and how I can best serve you. I may ask you questions about your family, your relationships, your work or school -- all so I can get to know a little about you. I will also tell you a little about me, and answer any questions that you may have. Together, we will determine a plan for our time together. I will give you feedback, ask questions, and offer perspective, ways of looking at your struggles differently, and most of all, I will listen to you, and assure you that you are being heard.
How long does counseling last?
The answer to this question is that it depends on your specific situation. Some people start feeling better right away after just a few sessions, and for others, it takes longer. The number of sessions depends on your goals, your history, the type of problem, the quality of the client-counselor relationship, and your ability to engage in the process during session and out of the session. The goal is to facilitate the process of meeting your counseling goals. You may choose to come once a week, or once every two weeks. You may come more than that if that is what you discover is needed to heal.
What is Counseling Catawba's approach to counseling?
I use an integrative approach to counseling but have extensive training in experiential techniques. I believe that these techniques, when applicable, allow for faster processing of new information.
How much does counseling cost? Do you accept insurance?
We are out-of-network with most insurance companies so we do not bill insurance companies directly. Your counseling services may be eligible for reimbursement through out-of-network benefits, and we can provide you with the receipt your insurance company will require. We recommend you speak to your insurance company about your benefits as policies vary. Private paying clients choose not to involve insurance companies in their mental health care as insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis to approve services, and often dictate how many counseling sessions are allowed, the duration, and have input into your specific treatment plan. To many, this may feel intrusive and/or limiting, especially since the mental health diagnosis becomes a part of your permanent health record.
We accept cash, check, and credit card, and offer sliding scale depending on circumstances. We can discuss when you call for an appointment or at our first session together.
If I see you with my spouse for couples counseling, can I see you individually as well?
I will only see one partner individually if the couple is also involved in couples counseling I have several colleagues that I work with that I will refer the other partner to if both partners are also wishing to engage in individual counseling.
Is everything I tell my counselor confidential?
Most things that occur in a therapy session are confidential but there are exceptions which will be covered fully at the first appointment.
I'm a teenager and my parent(s) wants me to see a counselor. Will the counselor tell my parent everything I say?
Parents of minors have the right to see the child’s medical records but I talk with everyone involved and try to come to an agreement before counseling starts about what will be shared.
